Our Values
restoration
We call this the tap room. It is a fully restored basement room in a stone house built circa 1820. It is a limestone house with Federal style woodwork, much of which is original. This cabinet is new, built to hide heating and water infrastructure. The heart pine floors are new, but made from reclaimed materials.
The wall finish was failing because it was multi-layers of modern ‘plastic’ paint. This doesn’t breathe, but fails when it gets water or vapor pressure behind it. This is traditional lime wash made with lime putty and a splash of NHL-2 to prevent dusting.
When partnering with Vintage, our team will put our collective heart into the work. It’s that simple – we will function as the advocate both for our clients as well as for the building. When starting Vintage in 1997, our company mission was to focus on perfectionism in our carpentry and detailing. Historic preservation is our passion; we added our millworking shop 20 years ago so that we could reproduce anything that was needed in the historic properties on which we work.
renovation
Every renovation project has complication and order of events challenges. We strive to perfect this for each project. This helps with both our efficiency, as well as quality. Doing most things in construction in a more linear order helps the outcome. You can do some things in parallel, but most of the time this management strategy is for speed and profit – which is not our mission.
The shingle style addition, which was built on an old single story, flat roofed garage, is a design done by Rob Hale following the style of the English architect Lutyens. It remains of of my favorite projects. Lutyens created exceptional designs: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edwin_Lutyens
Rob’s detailing was excellent, the job’s challenges were myriad, and the final result was rewarding. The interior design work was thoughtfully done.

about david logan
I studied biology and Chemistry at William and Mary and always had an interest in challenging work. I appreciate having a background in science in this job – it helps to tame the myriad inputs, at least a little. I worked for Universal Forest Products after college as a field scientist in their wood treating plants, and then moved into factory floor automation, building a control system for Universal’s 16 treating plants. I didn’t love taking Pascal in college, but loved doing that logical job in the real world.
I have always been fascinated by old buildings. We lived in Europe when I was in middle school, and it was a magical experience. When restoring, it feels like a bit of art and science mixed together. I don’t mean to make it sound like pie in the sky – it is hard work – but it feels worth doing. I know, not on a geologic scale, but worth it while we are here! My interest is in doing jobs that are difficult, while focusing on historical accuracy and quality. I especially enjoy working with architects and historians who add knowledge to the mix.
We are a specialty team of craftspeople performing complex renovation and restoration projects. The additional strength that we bring to bear is our traditional workshop, focusing on providing the necessary and accurate millwork for our projects.
