Woodwork

Woodwork

This is the door of a log cabin, painted with Ottosson Red Oxide Linseed Oil paint. The door is made from sapele, a cousin of mahogany. You can also see the strap hinges on the door and the thumb latch handle. In this photo at the bottom, you can also see the herringbone dry-laid brick floor and the walls that were restored and preserved with lime mortar.
Here we see a built in bookshelf using traditional sawtooth brackets, inset doors and drawers all painted with linseed oil paint. Stonewalls that have been whitewashed. A brass lamp attached to the top of shelf overhead illuminating the space. Below the bookshelf we see a custom slot built to hold firewood.

Custom beadboard-and-batten wooden door, face-nailed with square cut nails, hung on three hand-forged iron strap hinges with penny terminals. Period hardware includes a hand-forged iron box lock with turned knob and a brass deadbolt cylinder. Set in a white-painted traditional casing. Consistent with Colonial or early American interior joinery.
Custom symmetrical arched plaster niches with white built-in shelving flank a classical mantel with fluted columns, carved corbels, and dentil frieze. White subway tile firebox surround with brass insert. Heart pine floors.
Custom mahogany period sideboard with three graduated drawers, ornate brass chippendale-style pulls, and ogee bracket feet.
Outdoor kitchen pavilion featuring a heavy timber fir beam and post on a stone pier, with a fan of curved-profile rafter tails -- each individually shaped with a stepped scroll cut -- supporting the roof deck above. Lantern sconces mounted along the beam face. Brick and soapstone outdoor kitchen counter with built-in grill and sink below.
Interior view of an octagonal gazebo ceiling, looking straight up at a turned wood center hub with eight radiating rafters and fir plank decking.

An Ottoson linseed oil painted house with a traditional metal roof and a small bell tower, built in 1881, sits near Elmwood Cemetery. Restored in 2022 with victorian style trim and replicated bell tower.
